2026 Invitational Tournament
Competition Information and
Abridged By-laws
(revised 27-09-26)
Note: This is an abridged version provided for guidance to make an informed expression of interest on behalf of yourself or your club. Full Competition By-laws will be issued to competing teams prior to the commencement of the competition.
Competition format
The competition starts on 20 October. Based on 6 teams competing, the finals are scheduled for 8 December. The finishing date may vary depending on the final number of teams.
All games will be played at Galuwa Recreation Centre, 180 river Rd, Lane Cove unless otherwise advised.
The teams will compete in a single round-robin, with each team playing every other team once.
The top four teams at the end of the regular competition will qualify for the finals.
Semi-finals: 1st v 4th and 2nd v 3rd.
Grand Final: winners above will play immediately following their semi-finals.
Games
Games will consist of 4 × 10-minute quarters.
The clock will run continuously except for timeouts and the final two minutes of the fourth quarter, when the clock will stop on referee whistles.
There will be a 1-minute break between quarters and a 3-minute half-time break.
Each team may take two 1-minute timeouts per half.
Teams will have a 3-minute on-court warm-up before their scheduled tip-off.
At least one qualified referee will be provided for each game.
Players
Teams may register a maximum of eight players.
Where a club has more than eight wanting to play, those extra players can be allocated to another team to encourage participation and maintain balanced teams.
Where a team has fewer than five available players at the start of a game, one or more players may be temporarily assigned from another team for that game. Replacements will substitute out of the game if registered team members arrive after tip-off.
Late-arriving players may join their team bench once they are ready to play.
All players must be registered for the tournament and be current members of Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT for insurance and liability purposes.
There is no player points classification system in place.
Competition is open to able-bodied players.
Scorebench
For regular-season games, one person from each of the two teams not playing will provide the scorebench - one operating the clock and one maintaining the scoresheet.
Independent scorebench officials will be provided for the finals.
Competition points and tied games
A win earns 2 competition points, a loss earns 0 points.
Teams finishing level on points will be ranked according to their head-to-head result. If teams are still tied, the combined points differential from games between the tied teams will be calculated. If still tied, a coin toss by the organisers will be used.
A game tied at the end of regulation will be decided by five foul shots. The same five players will repeat the sequence if scores remain tied.
Scheduling
Scheduled game times are tip-off times. However, games may run beyond the scheduled time so delayed tip-offs of later games are possible.
The competition organisers may vary dates, times or venues where circumstances require.
Teams will be given reasonable notice of changes where practical.
Rules
Games will be played under the standard rules of wheelchair basketball, except where specifically modified by these competition by-laws.
Code of Conduct
This is a social and development competition. Players are expected to compete fairly, respect opponents, referees, coaches and volunteers, and contribute to a positive environment.
In particular, bullying, intimidation, ridicule or deliberately targeting and humiliating inexperienced players will not be tolerated, even where the behaviour may technically fall within the rules of the game.
The full Code of Conduct, including expectations around player behaviour and the consequences of unacceptable conduct, will be provided to participating teams and players prior to the commencement of the competition.
